Stratford man killed

A 59-year-old Stratford man died on Australia Day after coming off his motorcycle on the Bairnsdale-Dargo Road at Cobbannah.

The accident happened about 20 kilometres from Dargo at 2.30pm.

Police say the man was riding south when he failed to take a left hand bend.

An off duty nurse discovered the man and tried to revive him, but he died at the scene.

Meanwhile, a 62-year-old man from New South Wales was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital after a horror smash in Sale where the Bengworden Road enters the Princes Highway.

Police say the manʼs vehicle failed to give way to traffic on the Princes Highway where the Bengworden Road meets the main arterial.

His vehicle was T-boned by a vehicle being driven by an 84-year-old woman from Bairnsdale.

The woman, and another occupant of the vehicle, were transferred to the Bairnsdale Hospital.

Police described the collision as a “major impact, which resulted in traffic being diverted around the scene of the accident on Monday morning.


A man in his 70s, from Paynesville, has been charged with intentionally causing injury after he knifed a Lakes Entrance man in the abdomen in a dispute over boat moorings.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was taken to the Bairnsdale Hospital following the incident on Thursday evening where he was treated for the wound.

Police say the two men had earlier quarrelled about boat moorings at Flagstaff Jetty on Cunningham Arm at Lakes Entrance.

According to the police account, after several verbal confrontations, the elder man, who was intent on tying his boat up where the Lakes Entrance man had moored his boat, allegedly stabbed the victim.

The offender has been bailed to appear in court at a later date.
